Description and Objectives

The Master's degree in Innovation in Specific Didactics (MUIDE) is a professional training program that expands and strengthens knowledge about the Didactics of Mathematics, Experimental Sciences, and Social Sciences for Early Childhood and Primary Education.

The program, focused on action and reflection, emphasizes the exploration and creation of new didactic possibilities applicable to all educational environments, from schools to natural spaces, museums, and interpretation centers, among others.

Each student will develop an interdisciplinary innovation project carried out during the internship period in both formal and non-formal education centers. The implementation of these projects will provide students with additional training to navigate any educational innovation process with ease.

The objectives to be achieved through its completion are:

Increase knowledge and understanding of the main lines of innovation in Specific Didactics.

Apply and evaluate the usefulness of material, methodological, and technological resources that enrich teaching and learning in Mathematics, Experimental Sciences, and Social Sciences in Early Childhood and Primary Education.

Recognize opportunities where innovation adds value in formal and non-formal educational environments, as well as design, implement, evaluate, and defend interdisciplinary innovation projects in Specific Didactics

Student profiles

This Master's program is aimed at recent graduates of Teacher Education programs, as well as active professionals in Early Childhood or Primary Education who want to enrich their training in the Didactics of Mathematics, Experimental Sciences, and Social Sciences, as well as strengthen their ability to innovate in these areas. Additionally, applications from other related education qualifications will be considered.

To pursue the Master's degree, it is essential to have proficiency in Spanish, as well as a strong willingness to work collaboratively in cooperative work environments.

Professional Training

The most immediate professional outcome for graduates is in formal education through public and private offerings. This Master's guides students in making professional decisions in areas related to formal and non-formal education and how to connect with them and integrate them into their teaching practice.

Moreover, there are new opportunities to develop personal initiatives in emerging fields in Education, such as designing new learning methods, creating projects for ongoing teacher training in the field of Specific Didactics, professionalizing extracurricular support for formal education students, preparing STEAM laboratories, etc.

The contents of this master's degree are organized into four modules that will be taught in chronological order:

Module I: Introduction to Innovation in Specific Didactics.

Consisting of a single subject worth 6 ECTS, this module will be primarily delivered through lectures. It aims to provide students with an overview of the current situation of Innovation in Specific Didactics and its genesis over time.

Module II: Innovation in Specific Didactics.

Comprising 27 ECTS, this module is organized into three subjects of 9 ECTS each, and each subject into three courses of 3 ECTS. Theoretical and practical, this module addresses specific contents related to the most innovative trends in the areas of Mathematics Didactics, Social Sciences Didactics, and Experimental Sciences Didactics. Each subject develops an essential aspect for each didactic area.

Module III: Design of interdisciplinary innovation projects in Specific Didactics.

The third module of the master's, consisting of a single subject worth 9 ECTS, has a marked practical character. It is intended to work with students on one of the most promising innovation trends today: interdisciplinarity.

In this subject, students will carry out interdisciplinary innovation projects in Specific Didactics, practicing innovation methods and attending interdisciplinary workshops that combine two areas. The thematic focus of the projects will be proposed by the practice centers, so the projects designed by students will be a response to a real need or situation in each center.

Module IV: External Practices.

The last training module consists of a single subject with two courses, External Practices, worth 12 ECTS, and the Master's Final Project (TFM), worth 9 ECTS. The practices will involve the implementation and evaluation of the project designed in Module III, allowing students to complete a full cycle of innovation, from the initial challenge posed by the centers to the implementation and evaluation of the designed project. The involvement of practice centers (educational centers, museums, foundations, natural spaces, etc.) is therefore fundamental, not only during the practice period but also in the development of projects from their beginning.

In accordance with the agreements by UAM’s Postgraduate Studies Committee, any optional subjects on which less than five students are registered, may not go ahead. The students affected by this situation will be informed accordingly so that they can register on other subjects.

The choice of optional subjects may vary slightly before the start of the classes due to adjustments to the Master's Degree teaching schedule, in which case students will be informed accordingly

The application for admission to the Master's program is done electronically through our on-line admissions application. Before starting the admission process it is advisable to consult the following information and follow the instructions described in Admission step by step:

Specific Admission Requirements

Preference will be given to those who have completed a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and a Double Degree in Early Childhood and Primary Education, as well as active teachers in Early Childhood and/or Primary Education, over other degrees related to Education.

The language used in the training process will be Spanish, and it is necessary to have a good level and command of this language, both orally and in writing. For the admission of international students, a Spanish language certification at level B2, plus a personal interview with the student (in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), will be required.

Certificate of the average grade (2) [Required for students who have not done their access studies at the UAM].

Proof of Spanish language proficiency at B2 level [Compulsory only for non-Spanish speaking students].

Access Degree: If you have completed your studies at the time of applying for the master's degree, you must attach the degree certificate/diploma, bachelor's degree, or equivalent (or proof of having applied for the degree) in the application.

(1) The academic transcript must be translated if it is not in the Spanish language. It will not be necessary to translate documents if they are in English, French, Italian or Portuguese.

In the case of having taken Master’s/Doctoral studies, we recommend including them as additional documents to your application.

(2) If you have studied in Spain, you should attach a Certificate showing the average grade (on a scale of 0 to 10). If you have already studied at UAM, you will not need to submit this certificate.

If you have studied outside of Spain, you will need to submit the average grade equivalence issued by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (see section “related links”).

Other requirements for students with non-EU qualifications

When you have been notified about your acceptance on the Master's Degree, and your acceptance is based on a university qualification issued by a higher education institution not belonging to the EHEA, you will need to legalize the qualification via diplomatic channels in order to formalize registration, or by means of a “Hague Convention Apostille”.

Program Quality Assurance

Why Study this Master's at UAM?

The didactic approach of the Master's program blends theoretical foundations with hands-on experience in interdisciplinary innovation projects. The projects will be designed through workshops and then implemented in practice settings, providing a learning experience deeply connected to the educational reality, creating new scenarios of innovation from the Didactics of the three knowledge areas on which the Master's program is based, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and scientific expertise to educational practice.
