Microbiology

Programa de Doctorado en Microbiología

In the last decades, Microbiology has undergone an enormous expansion. Medicine, the ancient engine of Microbiology, has given way to a multitude of disciplines in which the latter has become an essential base or instrument. These include Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Genetics and Genomics, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Oceanography, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, as well as Soil and Agricultural Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, etc. The role of microbes in nature and in many processes is so important and diverse that their study and exploitation will have to continue for generations. In addition to academic research, numerous companies related to the aforementioned sectors demand trained professionals to carry out applied research and development of new microbial processes related to medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, environment, engineering, etc. On the other hand, new techniques, especially omics, have led to a revolution and a quantitative and qualitative leap in our knowledge of microorganisms in natural or manipulated systems.

The final aim of the UAM Doctorate program in Microbiology is to prepare leading researchers in the use and development of Microbiology methods capable of working on fundamental areas of Biology in its basic and applied aspects. Likewise, produce innovative personnel in the pharmaceutical, agri-food, oil industry, etc.

The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid has a long tradition of research and training in the disciplines of Microbiology and Virology and has researchers of recognized international prestige in the Departments of Biology, Molecular Biology and Ecology, of the School of Sciences and in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Microbiology of the School of Medicine. In addition, the UAM campus has several CSIC centers where high-level research in Microbiology is carried out, among them the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center and the National Center for Biotechnology. Together with the UAM, these centers and others make up the Campus of International Excellence in which the field of Biotechnology is framed, and within this, Microbiology.
