Industrial PhD Mention
UAM promotes the realization of Doctorates with Companies, in which PhDstudents carry out research through a collaboration with a public or private company or a public administration, within a Doctoral Program at UAM.
The aim of this instrument is to train qualified researchers to carry out R&D tasks and promote R&D&I activities in a business environment, and at the same time improve the relationship between the University and companies, thus intensifying the social impact of the Doctorate.
The Research Plan should address a project of business interest but which at the same time can generate enough knowledge to lead to innovative research.
Requirements for Industrial PhD Mention
During the development of the thesis, the following circumstances must occur:
a. The thesis is carried out within a research project of industrial, commercial, social or cultural interest of an entity, public or private company or public administration. Universities, public research organizations (national or regional) and university hospitals are excluded.
b. The intention to carry out an “industrial doctorate” must be reflected in the personal research and training plan (PIFP), during the first year of the doctorate, or in the annual report of following years.
c. An agreement must be signed between the entity, company or public administration and UAM for the academic evaluation and follow up of the doctoral thesis.
d. The doctoral student must have been hired by the entity, company or public administration where the research project is carried out for at least a period equivalent to one year of full-time dedication, while enrolled in a doctoral program.
e. A substantial part of the thesis, at least one year, must be carried out in the entity, company or public administration.
In addition to the thesis supervisor and tutor appointed by the Academic Committee of the doctoral program, a responsible figure must be appointed by the company or public administration. The external person in charge may perform, if necessary, and with the mandatory appointment by the Academic Committee of the program, thesis direction functions.
It will be necessary to prepare a scientific-technical report describing the direct relationship between the doctoral thesis and the work carried out by the doctoral student in the company or entity, proving both the business interest and the generation of sufficient knowledge to be considered innovative research. This report will be endorsed by the external responsible and by the thesis director and must be approved by the Academic Committee of the doctoral program at least one year before the application for authorization for the deposit and defense of the thesis.
IMPORTANT: if the student wishes to opt for the Industrial PhD Mention, this procedure is mandatory for doctoral students enrolled for the first time from the academic year 2024/2025, being voluntary for those who made their first enrollment prior to the academic year 2024/2025.

The doctoral student will submit the request for signing the agreement (download area) to the Academic Committee of the doctoral program, by e-mail to doctorado.gestion@uam.es (subject: solicitud convenio doctorado industrial).
