Thesis Supervisor and Personal Supervisor (Tutor)
Thesis Supervisor
During the admission procedure, the Academic Committee of the PhD Program will appoint a Thesis Supervisor for the PhD candidate. The supervisor may be any individual holding a PhD, regardless of nationality, who has demonstrated sufficient research experience, irrespective of the university or institution in which they are employed. It is also possible for Thesis Supervisors to act as Personal Supervisors (Tutors).
In certain circumstances, such as in the case of multidisciplinary theses or those involving co-supervision at different institutions, there may be more than one thesis supervisor (exceptionally, three Thesis Supervisors).
Personal Supervisor (Tutor)
A personal supervisor (tutor) will be appointed by the Academic Committee of the PhD programme at the time of admission, to provide guidance and support to the PhD candidate in the pursuit of their research training.
The personal supervisor (tutor) must be a professor with a doctoral degree, associated with the doctoral programme and a permanent member of one of the participating institutions, and will oversee the interaction between the doctoral candidate and the Academic Committee.
Personal supervisors (tutors) may also be thesis supervisors.
Proposal of Thesis and Personal Supervisors
During the application process, you will need to nominate a researcher who approves your research project and agrees to take on the role of thesis supervisor, if approved by the Academic Committee.
Some PhD programmes also ask you to propose a personal supervisor (tutor).
There is a list of researchers for each PhD Programme in their websites. Some Programmes (Human Sciences: Geography, Anthropology and African and Asian Studies; Law, Government and Public Policy; Economics and Business; Education; Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience and Biophysics; Modern History; Computer and Telecommunication Engineering; Neuroscience; Psychology) have provided a LIST of some researchers who are available as thesis supervisors for the academic year 2024/2025. This document will be updated on 28th June and 13th September).
