Doctoral Thesis

If you started the deposit process BEFORE October 1st 2024, and the Academic Committee of your PD has approved you for deposit, you must follow the process as described in the following document, that contains the information in our website until September 30th 2024:

The doctoral thesis document

The doctoral thesis document that will be subject to authorization by the Academic Committee of the doctoral program, will be evaluated by a board appointed for this purpose, and will be published in the repository of the UAM will have the following characteristics:

Electronic format; .pdf with a maximum file size, 50 Mb.
The entire thesis document must be written in a single language (the abstract, key words and conclusions must be in Spanish and English).
As a general rule for all UAM theses, the cover must conform to the models that appear in the download area.
The document will not contain any electronic signature
In theses with differential character (compendium of publications, international mention, industrial mention) the thesis document must conform to what is specified in each of these procedures.
Doctoral programs may have specific guidelines (in relation to length, bibliography format, etc., which must be followed before submitting the final version of the thesis).

From the writing of the thesis to its defense

In the Downloads area you can download a guide chart from the end of the thesis until its defense.

Once the writing is completed, and until the defense, you must go through the following academic-administrative processes:

Authorisation of the deposit by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme. This phase includes the assessment of the thesis by experts external to the doctoral programme and the university.
Deposit of the thesis, once authorised by the Committee, for assessment by the University Community.
Authorisation by the Commission for the Equivalence and Defence of Doctoral Theses, which includes the appointment of the examining board.
Defence itself, after its meeting notice by the secretary of the examining board.

All this procedure (except the defense) is processed through the application “Online Thesis Deposit” that you will find in Sigma. In the download area you will find a document with detailed information about these procedures.

The time from registration of the application for authorisation of the deposit until the defence is variable, depending on a number of factors. Ideally it could be slightly more than two months, but it can be much longer.

It is not advisable to choose a defence date before the deposit, even if these deadlines are taken into account.
