CIVIS Staff Week on Service-Learning “Learn about service-learning and develop your own project!”

Course Description

This staff week proposes a training on the fundamentals of service-learning (SL).A first online session will be dedicated to introducing the fundamentals of SL and the process of designing and implementing a SL project.

As a follow-up to this 1st session, online resources (theoretical contents and exercises) will be shared in an asynchronous mode through the Moodle platform, in order to the participants to study them at their own rhythm, but also to inspire them and start thinking about a possible international SL project with other participants of the training.

In the second session in video conference, participants will have the opportunity to present their ideas of a project and work in groups with the objective of developing the draft of a project. The experts will go from a group to another to give input to help designing the projects.

Before the face-to-face session, participants will get access to more specific readings on various related issues, and materials (e.g., filled-out templates with the description of designed projects, rubrics for evaluation, materials for reflection, etc).

During the face-to-face mobility, participants will have the opportunity to improve the design of their projects in collaboration with the other participants and the SL experts. Also, an in-depth training will be provided, focusing on specific issues such as evaluation, reflection, dissemination, research and publication, e-SL, ... A visit to a community/local partner of an active SL project in Marseille is also planned. Furthermore, the possibility of creating a CIVIS service-learning network and its organization will be discussed.

• To understand the SL-methodology
• To develop the competences for designing a SL-project
• To encourage lecturers to implement SL-methodology
• To learn from other lecturers/universities and SL experts
