Classroom code-switching has been an important research topic in sociolinguistic and ethnographic research in the past 2 decades. Recent research developments have introduced the concepts of translanguaging and multimodality, and reworked the old research questions in new contexts. In this presentation, I shall attempt to integrate both the old and new research perspectives and methodologies, while situating all of these in the contemporary sociopolitical contexts of language-in-education policy research studies, especially those in Southeast Asian contexts. Implications for teachers will also be discussed with respect to the recent rise of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in Europe.
