Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics

Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics
The degree programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics trains professionals who are specialized in applying their knowledge on the implications of diet on human health.
  • The UAM Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, which is taught at the Faculties of Science and Medicine, has an important social role since its ultimate aim is to train experts in the field of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and prepare them for working in the profession of dietetics and nutrition.

    The training objectives of the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, which is included under the branch of Health Sciences, are focused towards the general and comprehensive education of future professionals, providing them with the knowledge necessary to understand the implications that diet has on health. One of the main achievements is the new approach given to modern nutrition, beyond the limits of the classical focus of traditional nutrition, based on the view that food should not only nourish but should also contribute towards improving the wellbeing and health of an individual.

    In order to reach these goals, the study plan has been structured around different modules, which allow students:

    To understand the basic principles of nutrition and dietetics and be able to identify and interpret factors that influence the health of the population;

    Provide a suitable training programme to students with regards to the composition and properties of foodstuffs, how they are modified in the various processes they are put through and basic ways to preserve them.

    Develop the abilities needed to intervene in the quality and safety of products, installations and processes in the food industry, and provide suitable training in hygiene and nutrition;

    Develop the skills and abilities necessary to apply the knowledge gained in relevant topics related to achieving a suitable diet and nutrition, always in line with the principles of protecting and promoting health, the prevention of illness and dietetic-nutritional treatment.

    Acquire the basic training to carry out research, understanding the importance and the limitations of scientific thought when it comes to healthcare and nutrition.

    The repercussions of all of the above, not only at a social level but also at an economic one, highlight the important role that the university degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics will play in the future.
