The Department originated from the Physics Department created by Prof. Nicolás Cabrera in the early 1970s. It currently conducts intense research in numerous fields of Condensed Matter Physics and Biophysics. The main research groups are:

• Low Temperature Physics
• Surface Physics
• New microscopies 1
• New microscopies 2 (ultra-high-vacuum section)
• Moving light and electrons (MOLE)
• Theory and Simulation of Condensed Matter
• Electronic Properties of Novel Materials (EPNM)
• Electron Transport and Dynamics in Magnetic and Superconducting Nanostructures (MAGNETRANS)
• Single molecule electronics (SMOL)
• Biodynamics and Computational Biology

 

The Department of Condensed Matter Physics carries out its teaching activities in following undergraduate degrees:

• Physics. The Department teaches Theoretical and Practical courses and coordinates the 2nd and 4th course teaching laboratories.
• Chemistry
• Mathematics
• Biology
• Computer engineering

The Department also provides teaching in the following Postgraduate degrees:

• Masters and doctorate in Biophysics (Official Postgraduate Programme with a Quality Mention)
• Masters in Molecular Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
• Masters in Condensed Matter Physics and Nanotechnology (Official Postgraduate Programme with a Quality Mention)
