1. Assessing ecosystem services flows along rural-urban gradients: applicability to social-ecological landscape planning

The PhD student will analyze and assess ecosystem services flows (ES) along two rural-urban gradients characteristic of mediterranean mountains associated to big cities in Spain: the Sierra Nevada-Granada city gradient, and the Sierra de Guadarrama-Madrid city gradient. The ultimate goal of the thesis will be to analyze the supply-demand of ES, assessing the level of coherence or mismatch between ecological and socioeconomic elements along rural-urban gradients, as a consequence of existing landscape planning schemes.

2. Mechanistically-based environmental risk assessment of emerging contaminants using transcriptomic, metabolomics and apical responses of regulatory relevance in the crustacean Daphnia magna and the fish embryo Danio rerio (zebrafish)

A 4-years Ph.D. scholarship is being offered at the Institute of Environmental assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC, www.idea.csic.es) located in Barcelona (Spain). The scholarship is funded under the Spanish National Programme for Training Human Resources 2015 (Formacion de Personal Investigador, FPI-MICINN) and will be performed as part of the Spanish Research Project “Mechanistically-based environmental risk assessment: towards an omics-driven solution for an effective management of chemical risks” (EMRISK Code CTM2014-51985-R , 2015-2019).

3. Temporary fluvial ecosystems and global change: effects on ecosystem structure and functioning

We are seeking two PhD students to join an interdisciplinary research team on freshwater ecology at the Department of Ecology at the University of Barcelona (UB) and at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), based in Girona, Spain. The candidates will participate in the research project FUNSTREAM (Temporary fluvial ecosystems and global change: effects on ecosystem structure and functioning, CGL2014‐58760‐C3‐1,2‐R), joint project UB‐UdG‐ICRA.
