Meiosis precisely halves the chromosome complement thereby allowing parents to make equal genetic contributions to their offspring, and maintaining stable ploidy with successive generations. Accurate segregation at the first meiotic division requires the connection of homologous chromosomes by crossovers. Key crossover factors include homologs of the DNA mismatch-repair proteins, MutS and MutL; recent insights into the functions and regulation of these factors will be presented.
