Giovanni Bottari studied Chemistry at the “Universitá degli Studi di Messina”, Italy, graduating in 1999 with 110/110 "cum laude". In 2000, he started a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, under the supervision of Prof. David A. Leigh. In March 2003, Dr. Bottari joined the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), within the group led by Prof. Tomás Torres. Dr. Bottari was a postdoctoral fellow from 2003 to 2004, and a "Marie Curie" European Fellow from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, he obtained a "Ramón y Cajal" contract, that ended up in 2011, the year in which Dr. Bottari obtained a positive evaluation from the I3 Program. In 2011, he was appointed “Profesor Contratado Doctor” (the equivalent to Assistant Professor) and in 2012, he obtained the accreditation to “Profesor Titular”, the equivalent to Associate Professor, a position which he secured in 2021. Beside Associate Professor at UAM (since 2021), Dr. Bottari is currently Associate Researcher at IMDEA Nanoscience (since 2013), and researcher at the Institute for Advanced Research in Chemical Sciences (IAdChem) (since 2016).
At large, his scientific activity involves the synthesis and study of molecular and supramolecular systems based on phthalocyanines, subphthalocyanines, and other porphyrinoids for optoelectronic applications, as well as the organization and reactivity of these derivatives on solid surfaces. The work developed during his research career, which resulted in three “sexenios de investigación”, has led to 70 peer-reviews publications (A full list of publications can be found visiting the Researcher ID (A-8957-2013) and ORCID (0000-0001-6141-7027) accounts of Dr. Bottari).
Dr. Bottari has an H-index of 27 and has been editor, together with Prof. Torres, of a book titled "Organic Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Characterization and Device Applications" published in 2013 by John Wiley & Sons.
Dr. Bottari has supervised 2 doctoral theses (and he has 3 in progress) and 7 master's theses (and he has 1 in progress). The researcher has participated in 31 conferences in national or international congresses, delivering oral communications in 23 of them (of which 14 invited talks). 6 of the invited talks have been delivered at two of the most important international conferences in Dr. Bottari research area (i.e., “International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines” (ICPP) and “Meeting of the Electrochemical Society” (ECS)). He has also co-organized a symposium in the three latest ICPP meetings. Dr. Bottari has acted as peer reviewer for more than 115 research articles (most of them from Q1 journals, see Dr. Bottari Publons account).
Dr. Bottari has been/currently is principal investigator (IP) in 5 national projects and has participated in the research team of 20 R&D projects financed in public calls both nationally (12) and internationally (8). In 2016, he received the "John Shelnutt Young Investigator Award", a prestigious international award granted by the "Society of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (SPP)" that recognizes the extraordinary contribution of young researchers in the field of porphyrins and phthalocyanines.
At large, his scientific activity involves i) the synthesis and study of molecular and supramolecular systems based on phthalocyanines, subphthalocyanines, and other porphyrinoids for optoelectronic applications, as well as the organization and reactivity of these derivatives on solid surfaces, ii) the preparation and study of some novel fluorescent molecular rotors, and iii) the on-surface synthesis and atomic-scale characterization of porphyrin-based nanostructures.
