Programs and Teaching Guides for Subjects
Curriculum information
The University Master’s degree in Linguistics Applied to English consists of 5 modules. The first (Methodological Training Module) and the fifth (Master’s Thesis) are mandatory, whereas the second (Linguistics Applied to Discourse and Communication in English Module) and the third (Linguistics Applied to the Learning of English as Foreign Language in Bilingual and Non-bilingual Contexts Module) are optional and outline the specialization itineraries that students can choose between. The itineraries are guidelines. Module four (Internships) is also optional.
Module 1: (“Methodological Training Module”)
Eminently methodological mandatory module. The subjects in this module are therefore instrumental, with the aim of students satisfactorily acquiring the skills linked to the most recent tools in Applied Linguistics research, such as: description and analysis of scientific methods; selection and processing variables in research design; study of qualitative and quantitative data analysis elements; design, compilation, automation and management of corpus linguistics; applications of a corpus in linguistic research and training in the critical analysis of scientific articles, the use of bibliographic databases and searches, the practice of scientific writing and conventions on scientific texts and writing up of scientific work. This module accounts for 10 ECTS credits, which involves two mandatory subjects. It is taught in the first term beginning in October.
Module 2: (“Linguistics Applied to Discourse and Communication in English Module”)
This is an optional specialization module in the application of the main linguistic theories to different areas of applied linguistics in the English language such as: analysis of discourse, linguistic creativity, relationship between lexicon and grammar in discourse, intercultural communication and linguistic consultancy and translation. This module establishes the bases of linguistic theories on which application is based in different areas in which the English language plays a fundamental role. According to their interests, students may choose the subjects in this module and complete the 35 optional credits with subjects from modules 3 and 4, which are also optional subjects.
Module 3: (“Linguistics Applied to the Learning of English as Foreign Language in Bilingual and Non-bilingual Contexts Module”)
This module is also an optional specialization module which focuses on the most recent applications of linguistic theory to the learning of foreign languages. It includes subjects that are designed for students who are interested in bilingual classroom education, transfer and analysis of errors, acquisition of lexicon, different factors involved in acquiring second languages and the creation and use of corpus and the application of new technologies in teaching. This module is specifically designed for research in the teaching and learning of second languages, more specifically the English language. As is the case of Module 2, it is fundamentally theoretical, whilst also offering students the possibility of applying it to education. According to their interests, students may choose the subjects in this module and complete the 35 optional credits with subjects from modules 2 and 4, which are also optional subjects.
Module 4: (“Internships”)
Collaborating companies: Regional Museum of Archaeology, National Library, Hispania Epigraphy Archive, Ancient History of the Middle East and Egypt Laboratory.
The internship agreements for this module are sufficiently varied so that the different training profiles on this Master's Degree are appropriately represented: linguistic consultants, translators, teachers, experts in preparing textbooks, etc. External internships will be supervised by a specific tutor (internship tutor) so that students acquire work experience and the relevant skills to enable their access to different areas of the job market where there is increasing demand for people with profiles such as those who graduate from this Master's Degree. This module consists of one optional subject accounting for 5 ECTS credits.
Module 5 (“Master's Thesis”)
The fundamental content of this module is research work by students. With this objective, students will have to prepare and defend a piece of academic work, a monograph or essay as the culmination of their Master's Degree studies, duly supervised by a professor. This module is mandatory and accounts for 15 ECTS credits. Through their Master's Theses students must prove they have acquired sufficient skills, capabilities and knowledge in academic training and specialist research in the field of linguistics applied to discourse and communication in the English language or the learning of foreign languages.
Notice
In accordance with the agreements by UAM’s Postgraduate Studies Committee, any optional subjects on which less than five students are registered, may not go ahead. The students affected by this situation will be informed accordingly so that they can register on other subjects.
The choice of optional subjects may vary slightly before the start of the classes due to adjustments to the Master's Degree teaching schedule, in which case students will be informed accordingly.
