Programs and Teaching Guides for Subjects
Curriculum information
This Master's Degree is designed to further British literary and cultural studies, paying attention to the diversity of English-speaking countries, from a contemporary critical perspective that includes the areas of translation and communication.
The Master's Degree has a modular structure with emphasis on optional subjects so that students can design their own itinerary under supervision of their tutors so that it best matches their intellectual interests or future professional aspirations. It is divided into the following modules:
MANDATORY MODULE:
Module 1. Texts. Representation. Discourse (10 ECTS credits)
This is for students to find out about representation, reading and language problems comprising the literary and cultural situation. It covers two subjects, which are split into specific subjects. Personal attendance. Language: English.
OPTIONAL MODULES:
This Master's Degree features 5 optional modules so that students can design their own itineraries after discussing them with the Master's Degree Coordination Committee. Students will choose any combination of the subjects from these 5 modules (modules 2, 3 and 4, research seminar, module 5, or internships, module 6) until they complete 35 credits. Modules 2, 3 and 5 are recommended for students with a researcher profile, whereas for students pursuing a professional career, module 6 (Internships) is recommended and for translation, credits from module 4 are more suitable.
In order to complete the credits in modules 2 and 3, students may likewise take 15 credits from the subjects in the Master’s degrees in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at UAM, which are listed as follows (if available):
University Master’s Degree in the Philosophy of History: Democracy and World Order: Subjects:
- Modernity and Imperialism: Representation Policies.
- Conception of Historical Time.
- Literature and Politics.
- Politics and Vanguard
University Master's Degree in the History of Contemporary Art and Visual Culture: Subject:
- Contemporary Languages of Cinema.
University Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies: Subject:
- Feminism: Theory and Practice.
University Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics: Subject:
- Discourse and Philosophy: Applied to Social Conflict.
Module 2. Literary Languages. Optional (30 ECTS)
This module is eminently literary. Students will further their knowledge on the main literary movements and the most representative authors and texts in English literature, and also in literary analysis techniques. The module covers six areas, which are taught in specific subjects. Personal attendance. Language: English, except for subject 4 (Literary theories of the 20th and 21st Centuries) which may be taught in Spanish.
Module 3. Literature and Society. Cultural Studies in English-Speaking Countries. Optional (25 ECTS)
This module deals with literature from the viewpoint of cultural studies and is designed for students who wish to further their knowledge on cultural problems which are reflected in literary texts. It is recommended for students who are interested in a specialty in translation and consists of 5 areas which are taught in specific subjects. Personal attendance. Language: English.
Module 4. Translation Studies. Optional (10 ECTS)
This module exclusively deals with Translation studies. It is designed for students who are interested in a specialty in translation and consists of two areas which are taught in specific subjects. Personal attendance. Language: English.
Module 5. Research Seminar. Optional (10 ECTS)
As opposed to the regulated teachings in the previous modules, this module is a cycle of conferences and seminars delivered by guest professors and/or writers whose work is set in the context of contemporary problems. It is designed for students who wish to further their knowledge in literary studies and who later aspire to carry out research work. Personal attendance.
Module 6. Practicum. Optional. (10 ECTS).
This module covers two areas and is for students who later want to start out in cultural management or text editing. It consists of a seminar on text editing (5 ECTS) and the equivalent of 5 ECTS as an intern in cultural management.
Module 7. Master's Thesis. (15 ECTS). Mandatory.
This consists of writing a tutored final essay of between 25,000 and 30,000 words in which students will prove their ability to identify a suitable literary or cultural subject to study, and to apply appropriate analysis and discussion techniques to defend their standpoint.
Notice
In accordance with the agreements by UAM’s Postgraduate Studies Committee, any optional subjects on which less than five students are registered, may not go ahead. The students affected by this situation will be informed accordingly so that they can register on other subjects.
The choice of optional subjects may vary slightly before the start of the classes due to adjustments to the Master's Degree teaching schedule, in which case students will be informed accordingly.
