Research, development and innovation

In its effort to provide research support services to the UAM as well as to numerous public and private organizations, the Interdepartmental Investigation Service develops different strategies to offer our users the most advanced features.

Scientific technological infrastructure

One of our missions is the implementation of new techniques and continuous development of characterization methodologies, essentially chemical and physical; in other words, to make an effort to acquire state-of-the-art equipment and obtain the maximum benefits from it.

  • Collaboration of the SIdI-UAM and BRUKER BIOSCIENCES ESPAÑOLA S.A. as a “Standard in TXRF for research, demonstration and advanced training in biomedical applications.”
  • Collaboration of the SIdI-UAM and ICMM-CSIC

Information and communication technologies

For over five years SIdI has strived to keep itself up to date in the era of information and communication technologies. For this, it has been designing and developing computer software in order to improve communication with users, facilitate management of the center and help run it by reporting information in real time.

  • Collaboration of the SIdI-UAM and ALATEL S.L.: The SIdI has been established as an R&D standard in @LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) for ALATEL.

CAM research projects

Currently the SIdI actively participates in four CAM research projects in which the laboratories provide support by performing and interpreting the analyses required by the groups of the consortium.

Microseres Program

The objective of this program is to develop new concepts and sensor components based on special materials for the micro- and nanostructured materials that combine the plasmon resonance properties of some materials with the electro-optical or magneto-optical properties of other nanomaterials.
Our Polycrystalline X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy laboratories make up the technical support for carrying out the analyses of the different samples, which make the project possible.

Microenvironment Program

The program promotes the use of microorganisms for the environmental analysis and restoration of ecosystems. For this it carries out analyses of microorganisms like Prokaryotic Bioindicators to define the quality of surface water and aquifers, genetically-modified microorganisms for the degradation of recalcitrant organic compounds, and plant-microorganism systems for the recovery of degraded soils. For each one of these purposes, the Stable Isotopes, Chromatography, Confocal Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy laboratories actively participate in order to carry out the different studies, which have made this program obtain excellent results on scientific evaluations of the Community of Madrid.

EIADES Program

The purpose of the lines of research proposed in this program is to recover soil that has been declared contaminated as dictated in the national environmental regulation (RD 9/2005, of 14 January) and the regional environmental regulation (Law 2/2002), by carrying out thorough monitoring and Environmental Impact Assessments for a series of activities and projects including the restoration of contaminated sites.
For this purpose the EIADES program has decided to develop innovative tools in which the SIdI ICP-Mass Spectrometry and X-Ray Fluorescence laboratories are a key element.

AVANCAT Program

This program addresses problems in catalysis which include practically all the areas of this branch of chemistry, from organocatalysis to the theoretical study of mechanisms of basic catalytic reactions, from the development of new catalysts and processes in asymmetric catalysis to the application of catalytic methods in modification of biomolecules and solid-phase materials.
The nature of the program is fundamental research and it aims to establish a network of knowledge of catalysis in the Community of Madrid, which will be responsible for the complete development of catalysis and its chemical applications.
The Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction, Mass Spectometry, Chemical Elemental Analysis and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance laboratories are used for the Development of New Highly-Efficient Catalytic Methodologies.
It must be noted that the AVANCAT program has received an excellent rating for the first cycle of the project, which has just been finished.
